Emerging roles of circular RNAs in non‑small cell lung cancer (Review)

Abstract: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of novel endogenous transcripts with limited protein-coding abilities. CircRNAs have been demonstrated to function as critical regulators of tumor development and distant metastasis through binding to microRNAs (miRNAs) and interacting with RNA-binding proteins, thereby regulating transcription and translation. Emerging evidence has illustrated that certain circRNAs can serve as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of cancer, and/or serve as potential therapeutic targets.… Show more

“…1,22 Over the past decades, numerous studies have facilitated novel biomarker and effective targets exploration in NSCLC, which unveiled a large number of abnormal expressions of circRNAs involved in lung cancer pathogenesis. [23][24][25] In particular, it has been proposed that circRNAs could function as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNA) to interact with miRNAs (typically absorb miRNA expression like a sponge). [25][26][27][28][29] Here hsa_circ_0088036 was found to be aberrantly elevated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with RA.…”

“…CircRNAs have multiple functional modes, one of which is the competitive absorption of microRNAs (miRNAs) 10 . circRNA–miRNA–mRNA interaction networks have been widely noticed in the tumorigenesis and invasive progression of NSCLC 11 . For example, circ‐Mediator of cell motility 1 (circ‐MEMO1)/miR‐101‐3p/Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene axis induces NSCLC progression and glycolysis 12 and circ‐paired like homeodomain 1/miR‐30 e‐5p/Integrin 6 axis stimulates epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in NSCLC 13 .…”
