Emerging Roles of Coronavirus in Autoimmune Diseases

Abstract: Virus infection can alter immune regulatory activity, and thus may be involved in the occurrence of autoimmune diseases. Recently, the pandemic of COVID-19 has posed a huge threat to public health and emerging evidence suggests that coronavirus may be implicated in the development and pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. However, how coronavirus infection impacts the risk of autoimmune disease remains largely unknown. In this review, we focused on the association between coronavirus and autoimmunity, and eluci… Show more

“…61 Coronavirus may induce autoimmune diseases caused by a considerable increase in proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines in the infected person's serum. 62 Accordingly, a virus-triggered immunopathology may advance demyelinating disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). 63 Similar results were obtained in animal models confirming the role of coronaviruses in demyelination and intracranial axonal degeneration.…”

“…There are seven coronaviruses of varying pathogenicity that can infect humans ( 15 ). Autoimmune diseases concomitant with coronaviruses have been suggested to be associated with cross-reactivity of antibodies or activated lymphocytes with different antigens which own the same or similar epitopes ( 16 ). Two cases of pemphigus vulgaris following SARS-CoV-2 infection, as well as BP in an elderly female and a middle-aged female with COVID-19 were reported ( 17 20 ).…”
