Emerging Roles of Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (VCAM-1) in Immunological Disorders and Cancer

Abstract: Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that triggers the expression of inflammatory molecules, including other cytokines and cell adhesion molecules. TNFα induces the expression of intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). VCAM-1 was originally identified as a cell adhesion molecule that helps regulate inflammation-associated vascular adhesion and the transendothelial migration of leukocytes, such as macrophages and T cells. Recent evidenc… Show more

“…Vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) is an inducible glycoprotein, and E-selectin is a soluble cell adhesion molecule. Both molecules are primarily expressed in the endothelium [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. The serum levels of soluble VCAM-1 appear to be correlated with the degree of atherosclerosis and may be used for diagnosing the early stages of the condition [ 8 ].…”

“…Nitric oxide generated by iNOS is closely implicated in the development of various types of liver disease such as hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis (Iwakiri and Kim, 2015). Both VCAM and VEGFC have been shown to regulate chronic vascular inflammation in various disease models (Hsu et al, 2019;Kong et al, 2018). In summary, our results suggest that keratins, functioning as cytoplasmic anchors for protein kinases, regulate the nuclear localization of p38 and thereby could affect a number of signal transduction pathways and the expression of correlated genes.…”

“…VCAM-1 (Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule 1) overexpression is related to angiogenesis and metastasis in cancer, including GC (Kong et al, 2018); in which both local expression in gastric tissue and serum levels are directly associated with poor prognosis (Velikova et al, 1997;Ding et al, 2003). In children, Maciorkowska et al, described that serum concentrations of VCAM-1 were higher in symptomatic children with H. pyloriassociated gastritis compared to non-infected children; they also compared children with positive IgG against H. pylori but with no active gastric infection (Maciorkowska et al, 2005), showing that serum levels of VCAM-1 correlate with H. pylori-induced gastric inflammation and damage.…”
