Emerging Trends in Techniques and Technology as Applied to Filter Design

Abstract: In the last decade, the filter community has innovated both design techniques and the technology used for practical implementation. In design, the philosophy has become "if you can't avoid it, use it", a very practical engineering approach. Modes previously deemed spurious are intentionally used to create in-line networks incorporating real or imaginary transmission zeros and also reduce the number of components and thus further miniaturize; spurious responses are re-routed to increase the passband width or st… Show more

“…However, the application of additive manufacturing technologies such as selective-laser-melting (SLM) and selective-laser-sintering (SLS) are under intense research due to their foreseen potential in complex and scalable manufacturing scenarios (e.g. [1]- [5]). Although CNC and EDM fabricated components have been able to demonstrate good results and are well adopted by industry, drawbacks such as cost, yield, and production volume are difficult to overcome for ever-changing global markets and have given rise to competitive solutions provided by the alternative technologies that have been previously mentioned.…”

“…Bandpass filter (BPF) is an inevitable device in the RF front end of a wireless/microwave communication system for rejecting unwanted frequencies. One of the key metrics for characterizing a practical BPF is circuit miniaturization, and the design challenge lies in satisfying the trade-off among insertion loss, achievable bandwidth, and upper stopband extension [1]. The circuit size reduction often relies on the miniaturization techniques of individual resonator, such as hairpin resonators [2], steppedimpedance resonators (SIRs) [3], and hybrid-resonance resonators [4].…”

“…TZs can be produced either by cross couplings, non-resonant modes, or frequency-variant coupling structures. In waveguide technology, frequencyvariant coupling inverters can be implemented as a single post or as dual-partial-height posts placed in the broad wall, as series-or shunt-type stubs, or with more-complex resonant diaphragms [1]- [4]. A detailed coupling-matrix-based synthesis procedure to design filters with arbitrary frequencyvariant coupling structures is presented in [5].…”
