It may occur at any age and we need to understand its symptomatology. We report a case of emetophobic child whose fear of vomiting started after an attack of acute appendicitis. In the initial stage, fear was limited to vomiting, later it became generalized to a fear of seeing the vomitus, worries that parents may suffer vomiting, fear of vomiting in public … Show more

“…To date, only one RCT has been published comparing the effectiveness of CBT to wait list control (Riddle-Walker et al, 2016). Most case reports suggest that SPOV can be treated successfully by CBT (Graziano, Callueng, & Geffken, 2010;Hunter & Antony, 2009;Kahana & Feeny, 2005;Kobori, 2011;Pollard, Tait, Meldrum, Dubinsky, & Gall, 1996;Whitton, Luiselli, & Donaldson, 2006), behavioral approaches (Faye, Gawande, Tadke, Kirpekar, & Bhave, 2013;Herman, Rozensky, & Mineka, 1993;Lesage & Lamontagne, 1985;Maack, Deacon, & Zhao, 2013;McFadyen & Wyness, 1983;Philips, 1985;Williams, Field, Riegel, & Paul, 2011); systemic behaviour therapy (O'Connor, 1983); psychotherapy (Manassis & Kalman, 1990); hypnotherapy (McKenzie, 1994;Ritow, 1979); Competence Imagery and imaginal coping (Moran &…”

“…As emetophobia is relatively unique in its expression and course, single-subject designs have most often been used to study treatment outcomes (Maack, Deacon, & Zhao, 2013). Previous case studies used combinations of cognitive-behavioral therapy (Graziano, Callueng, & Geffken, 2010), exposure therapy (Hunter & Antony, 2009; Maack et al, 2013; Moran & O’Brien, 2005; Williams, Field, Riegel, & Paul, 2011), and pharmacological intervention (Faye, Gawande, Tadke, Kirpekar, & Bhave, 2013; Fix, Proctor, & Gray, 2016). In addition, most case studies (Faye et al, 2013; Fix et al, 2016; Graziano et al, 2010; Williams et al, 2011) summarized treatments for children or adolescents.…”

“…44 Only one case of emetophobia (fear of vomiting) has been reported in India. 45 Basu et al reported two cases of individuals who developed agoraphobic symptoms after developing alcohol dependence, with phobic symptoms worsening during alcohol abstinence. The investigators recommended the need for a comprehensive treatment model for this group to address the issues of alcohol dependence and underlying anxiety disorder.…”
