The analyses focus on the structural change in agriculture and farm households for the selected hilly and mountainous areas in Slovenia before and after the accession to the European Union, with an emphasis on empirical analysis of a sample of income diversification of rural households in the census years, and the importance of self-employment for farm households’ well-being and food security. A t-test was applied to investigate the differences of arithmetic means between the two municipalities and between the two census years, and an F-test with analysis of variance was used for the differences of arithmetic means between four socioeconomic types of agricultural households (AHs). The number of farm households has declined with heterogeneous patterns according to their socioeconomic type and their location areas according to the level of economic development and natural farming conditions. Farm exits do not necessarily mean discontinuation of other nonfarming activities at a household. While the number of farm households leaving farming has increased, there has also been an increase in farm households engaged in other gainful activity such as supplementary farm activities and in off-farm employment and off-farm incomes. Income from farming for most households is not sufficient for survival, and therefore, diversification of income for households is imminent. Diversification of income from self-employment is important for more than one-third of households that maintain agri-food production for the market. Income from self-employment is an important source of income for household well-being and for investment in agricultural production to improve incomes from farming activities. Expansion of self-employment impacts the lack of time, business risks, and lack of interest of households to expand the business by renting external sources.

The lowest administrative-territorial unit in Serbia is a settlement, whereby the administrative criterion of dividing settlements into “urban” and “other” is inadequate for describing the rural area, which is extremely differentiated in Serbia due to various factors. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the typology of settlements in accordance with different development characteristics, with a special emphasis on areas that are lagging in development. The goal of this research is to present a rural index of Serbia. The importance of this research is reflected in the methodological improvement of the classification of rural settlements in Serbia. This approach indicates the development potential and limitations of local areas in Serbia, which is the basis for support and financing of local development programs. The results point to different categories of rural settlements: rural settlements heavily influenced by the urban center; transitional rural settlements, i.e., rural centers; socio-economically devastated rural settlements; “retired”, abandoned, disappearing rural settlements, where it is necessary to adapt strategies and policies to different types. The results of the research provide important information to policymakers where specific development strategies for different types of settlements are proposed.

China’s agricultural OFDI has achieved a new promotion of regional opening to the RCEP agricultural field, and the bilateral agricultural trade cooperation has great potential. China’s agricultural OFDI has been steadily increasing in recent years. As significant trade partners for Chinese agricultural products, RCEP countries represent an important region for China’s agricultural OFDI initiatives. However, existing studies have paid little attention to the trade effect and dynamic impact of China’s agricultural OFDI on agricultural products of RCEP countries. Therefore, based on the panel data of agricultural trade between China and RCEP countries from 2004 to 2019, this paper uses the trade gravity model and TVP-VAR model to investigate the time-varying effects of China’s agricultural OFDI on agricultural trade of RCEP countries. The findings are as follows: (1) The impact of China’s agricultural OFDI on bilateral agricultural trade between China and RCEP countries has significant time-varying characteristics, and there are short-, medium-, and long-term positive impacts most of the time. (2) When the bilateral agricultural trade reaches a certain level, the role of China’s agricultural OFDI is limited, but the overall positive and significant impact remains, showing a strong trade effect. (3) The positive impact on China’s agricultural OFDI has a heterogeneous impact on RCEP countries with different income levels and geographical connections, but the overall positive externality effect is significant. The research conclusions expand the research perspective on the trade effect of agricultural OFDI to a certain extent and provide management and policy implications for agricultural enterprises to “move fast” and promote the sustainability of bilateral agricultural trade between China and RCEP countries through government efforts.
