Emission Characteristics of Air Pollutants and CO2 from 11 Cities with Different Economic Development around the Bohai Sea in China from 2008–2017

Abstract: Cities around the Bohai Sea are one of the main population cluster areas in China, which are characterized by high levels of sustainability performance and human capital, as well as resource-intensive industries. In this study, levels of economic development metrics and emissions of air pollutants (BC, CO, NH3, NOx, OC, PM2.5, PM10, and SO2) and CO2 across eleven cities around the Bohai Sea from 2008 to 2017 were compared to illustrate the potential relationships between air pollutants/carbon emissions and soc… Show more

“…GDP per capita correlated with annual emissions of ambient species (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and SO 2 ) in 11 cities around the Bohai Sea. For most cities, the emission and energy use per GDP decreased with the enhancements of economic growth, following the environmental Kuznets curves [ 44 ].…”

“…Numerous studies have explored the relationship between rising CO 2 levels, economic growth, technological innovation, and the role of renewable energy. Scholars emphasize the significance of adopting a holistic approach that considers both environmental sustainability and economic growth, as noted by researchers in the field (Zhao et al, 2022;Khan and Su, 2022). For a deep understanding of variables and findings, We have further divided the literature into three subsections as follows:…”

“…As we delve into the impact of renewable energy on environmental sustainability, it is crucial to investigate the multifaceted relationships identified in previous studies. (Zhao et al, 2022) studied eleven cities near China's Bohai Sea from 2008 to 2017, revealing emissions patterns resembling EKC. This study highlights resource-intensive cities' significance and potential to benefit from regional cooperation and technology development to reduce emissions.…”

“…In the past few years, China's total economic output has maintained a sustained and rapid growth trend. However, faster economic growth has also brought specific environmental pressures to China, such as overexploitation of coal and explosive growth in the chemical industry, leading to severe problems of atmospheric pollution [1], water pollution [2], and land pollution [3]. China has recognized the need to transition from its previous rapid industrialization model towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly development path [4].…”
