Emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide from short- and long-term organic farming Andosols in central Japan

Abstract: Here we have investigated the emission of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) from long-and short-term organic farming Andosols in Matsumoto city of Nagano, in central Japan. We focus on three upland plots in Matsumoto, distinguished by how long they had each experienced continuous organic farming ( , respectively. Greenhouse gas (GHG) balance was calculated at -52 and 97 g CO 2 -C equivalent m -2 in M39-OF and M1F-OF, respectively. Negative GHG balance indicated that M39-OF was … Show more

“…High CH 4 emission in inorganic fertilizer amended soils due to fertilizer N inhibition of CH 4 oxidation has been reported in many studies [51,63]. We did not find the evidence of higher CH 4 emissions in plots amended with inorganic fertilizer in this study and there was no significant difference in annual CH 4 emissions among the plots.…”

“…CO 2 fluxes correlated with soil types Soil CO 2 flux is generally positively correlated with soil temperature (Lloyd and Taylor 1994;Davidson et al 1998;Nagano et al 2012) and the rates of soil CO 2 flux vary by ecosystem (Raich and Schlesinger 1992;Melling et al 2005). In our study, the soil CO 2 fluxes were not directly influenced by soil temperature.…”

“…Because of these changes to the N cycling 100-yr lifetime caused by soil disturbance and use of N fertilizers, N 2 O emissions from agricultural soils are particularly large, and obtaining reliable estimates is not straightforward (Syväsalo et al 2004). The amount of N 2 O released is usually related to N application as organic or mineral fertilizers; a linear relationship between N 2 O emission and fertilizer input has been found (Bouwman 1990), and it is dependent on the form in which the N fertilizers are used, the location (i.e., soil type and climatic conditions) and the cultivated crops present (Corre et al 1995;MacKenzie et al 1998;Nagano et al 2012).…”

“…Azolla compost is a viable amendment considering the agronomic benefits provided, while decreasing the likelihood of N 2 O production under moderate moisture conditions. Further study is needed for long-term evaluation in organic farming systems as examined by Nagano et al (2012).…”
