“…The author's interest in the subject of this article was piqued when he was struck by certain similarities between the 'Work of the Yam' in Tikopia (Firth 1940b(Firth ( 1967 : 141-197)' and the 'Magic' of the 'Coral Gardens' of the Trobriand Islands (Malinowski 1935:85-197). Already familiar with, and quite convinced by, Margot-Duclot and Vernant's ( 1946) interpretation of Trobriad myths of origin and garden ritual in terms of Trobriand ideas about human reproduction, he was led to wonder if Tikopia ideas about human reproduction were similarly related to myths of origin and to garden ritual, and if all three of these aspects of Tikopia culture might have Trobriand parallels.2 Allowing for some problems and some gaps, the answers to these questions appear to be 'yes'.
