Emotion regulation across childhood and adolescence: evidence for a maladaptive shift in adolescence

Abstract: Dysfunctional emotion regulation is an important predictor of psychopathology. Although many clinical programs focus on emotion regulation skills, the successful application of these programs in children and adolescents requires knowledge on the normative use of emotion regulation strategies over age. To this end, the current cross-sectional study examined changes in emotion regulation throughout childhood and adolescence. The use of seven adaptive and five maladaptive emotion regulation strategies was measure… Show more

“…Building on the latter point, the age range of participants in these two papers encompassed separate developmental periods, that is, childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. This may have had an impact on the pattern of results found, as ER processes develop and change from infancy to adulthood (Schäfer et al 2016), with evidence of a maladaptive shift during adolescence between the ages 12 and 15 years [Cracco, Goossens, & Braet, ]. To clarify these mixed findings, it would be important to further study suppression in ASD.…”

“…Adolescence is marked by a strong reward drive but relatively weak inhibitory control (Steinberg, ). Adolescence is also associated with the experience of intense emotions but with limited emotion regulation capabilities (Cracco, Goossens, & Braet, ; Larson, Moneta, Richards, & Wilson, ; Miller & Shields, ). These factors may contribute to the higher rates of problematic substance use (e.g., binge drinking, drinking and driving, and smoking cigarettes) and increased risk for obesity that emerges during adolescence (Dietz, ; Eaton et al, ).…”
