Emotion regulation and emotional distress: The mediating role of hope on reappraisal and anxiety/depression in newly diagnosed cancer patients

Abstract: The study findings suggest that hope mediated the association between reappraisal and anxiety/depression outcomes. Moreover, the high prevalence of anxiety and depression implies a need for healthcare providers to attend to the psychoemotional needs of newly diagnosed cancer patients.

“…Of the DERS subscales, difficulties with emotional clarity and strategies were the only significant pathways between resilience and distress, suggesting that they may be important unique mechanisms between the two factors. The use of emotion regulation strategies has previously been demonstrated as important in determining how one adjusts to cancer, but have mostly focused on one or two strategies at a time . This study is the first to show that as a whole, difficulties in accessing strategies to manage one's emotional response was significantly associated with increased distress.…”

“…Expressive suppression is regarded as a maladaptive strategy and is positively correlated with depression and anxiety (Campbell-Sills et al, 2006). Reappraisal, in contrast, is negatively associated with depression and anxiety (Martin and Dahlen, 2005; Desrosiers et al, 2013; Garland et al, 2011; Peh et al, 2017). Importantly, reappraisal is an essential component of mindfulness meditation and interventions (Goleman and Schwartz, 1976; Feldman et al, 2010; Jha et al, 2010), and has been highlighted as one of the mechanisms through which mindfulness works (Hölzel et al, 2011).…”
