Emotional eating and cognitive conflicts as predictors of binge eating disorder in patients with obesity

Abstract: Background/Objectives: Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is often associated with obesity. In order to identify the variables that allow to better detect the presence of BED, people with overnutrition were compared with and without BED in the presence of cognitive conflicts, eating symptoms and anxious-depressive symptoms. The inclusion of cognitive conflicts had been relevant in bulimia studies but had not been investigated with respect to BED. Method: Two groups with obesity were evaluated, one without BED (OB, n … Show more

“…Emotional eating is associated with more frequent and intense loss of control eating (i.e., binge eating; Masheb & Grilo, 2006). In several studies, emotional eating has been used to differentiate individuals with obesity and bingeeating disorder (BED) from individuals with obesity, suggesting that this tendency to eat in response to negative affect may be a contributor to loss of control eating (Escandón-Nagel, Peró, Grau, Soriano, & Feixas, 2018;Leehr et al, 2015;Masheb & Grilo, 2006). Overall, individuals with BED report higher levels of emotional eating (Pinaquy, Chabrol, Simon, Louvet, & Barbe, 2003) and fewer strategies to regulate negative affect (Whiteside et al, 2007) than those without eating pathology.…”

“…Similar results were found by Dweck et al [33] who found a relationship between worse sleep quality and emotional and disinhibited eating. Indeed, emotional eating has been considered a predictor of Binge Eating Disorder [36]. In this line, it has been demonstrated in normal and obese populations that emotional eating is associated with a higher BMI, which may be reflected in weight gain [34].…”
