Emotional Imagery: Conceptual Structure and Pattern of Somato‐Visceral Response

Abstract: This research examined deductions from a new theory of emotional imagery (Lang, 1979). Two experiments were performed, testing the hypothesis that the conceptual content processed during imagery determines the amplitude and pattern of coincident efferent activity. The image was manipulated by varying the content of the prompting instructions (either stimulus detail or active responding was emphasized in the image script) and by prior imagery training (in which subjects' post‐image verbal reports were shaped to… Show more

“…Despite the literature in favour of using SRM propositions and SR-training exercises (Lang et al, 1980), many interventions were not informed by this bio-informational theory (Lang, 1977(Lang, , 1979. Further, although more recent interventions include more PETTLEP model elements ), on average only four out of seven elements are used.…”

“…Further, Vastfjall and Slovic (2013) add to the discussion of anticipatory emotions by highlighting that mental imagery is an important aspect of their presence and activation. Some emotions are more easily imaged than others and mental imagery is often accompanied by electrodermal and visceral responses, which help bring about anticipatory reactions (Gollnisch & Averill, 1993;Haney & Euse, 1976;Lang, Kozak, Miller, Levin, & McLean, 1980). Mental imagery can therefore be seen as an important determinant of anticipatory emotions.…”
