Emotional reflexivity in contexts of migration: How the consideration of internal processes is necessary to explain agency

Abstract: Current societies are configured in such a way that relations with others are less defined and social conditions are complex and often nontransparent (e.g. Holmes, 2015;Bauman, 2003). There is never-ending uncertainty over how to act and how to feel. Set rules on how to feel no longer exist (Hochschild, 1983;Neckel, 2005;Wouters, 1999). “…In the first memo on care at the beginning of this contribution, I have mentioned several examples of critical theorisations of care, parenthood, intimacy, migration and citizenship providing phenomenological, relational and intersectional understanding of these concepts (Epstein and Carrillo 2014;Fudge 2014;Kershaw 2010;Longman et al 2013;Parreñas 2005;Pratesi 2018;Sevenhuijsen 1998;Yuval-Davis 2007). “…Several scholars have further highlighted the necessity to go beyond a mere comparative research agenda which has thus far characterised much of current literature on sexual minorities and same-sex families (Clarke et al, 2010;Gato, 2016).
