Emotions in Learning, Teaching, and Leadership: A Bibliometric Review of Asian Literature (1990–2018)

Abstract: This study aims to map the Asian literature on emotions in learning, teaching, and leadership through a review of published research in Web of Science Core Collection. In all, 862 articles published between 1990 and 2018 were retrieved and analyzed. Bibliographic coupling of the countries, bibliographic coupling of the authors, co-occurrences of author keywords, bibliographic coupling of the journals, and bibliographic coupling of the institutions were extracted through bibliographic visualization methods. “…Bibliometric analysis and bibliometric visualization methods were used to map the relevant literature. The researchers used VOSviewer software as a bibliometric analysis and visualization tool in the current study (Eck et al, 2017 ), and evaluative measures and in-depth analyses to map out the existing body of research outputs based on bibliographic data (Karakus et al, 2021 ). Bibliographic coupling analyses were performed to present the most prominent authors, countries, institutions, and sources in the domain of shadow education.…”

“…This paper provides a comprehensive view of shadow education research since its emergence from a bibliometric perspective. Bibliometric overviews offer an objective and systematic approach by measuring, tracking, and analyzing print-based scholarly literature in a specific field to reveal its scientific roots, identify emerging thematic areas and gaps in the literature and, ultimately, contribute to moving the field forward (Karakus et al, 2021 ). Consequently, this is the first study that has employed several bibliometric indicators to explore the evolution of shadow education research based on publication and citation trends, as well as venues contributing to this research field.…”

“…Step two entailed creating the exclusion criteria to refine the results ( cf . Karakus et al, 2021 ). The two authors carefully read the information of each study (i.e., the abstract and its bibliometric characteristics) and particularly examined its relevancy to TEL research.…”

“…Thomson Reuters' WoS was chosen as the database for analysis for three major reasons. First, WoS has been commonly chosen as the data source for bibliometric analyses studies in recent years (e.g., Cansun and Arik, 2018 ; Guo et al, 2020 ; Karakus et al, 2021 ). Second, WoS is one of the most established databases, which were built in 1900 with SSCI launched in the same year and A&HCI in 1975.…”

“…It should be noted that this article was the second most cited for the present research. Finally,Karakus et al (2021) in their bibliometric study on emotions in learning, teaching and leadership in the Asian context, highlight DW Chan and M. Zembylas as the main authors. The field of emotional intelligence (EI) is growing enormously as it plays an important role in all areas of life. Therefore, it is very important to know which are the top journals that publish research on the subject in order to understand the current trends.…”
