Integrating ecosystem services (ESs) to delineate ecological functional zones (EFZs) is fundamental in terrestrial spatial planning and ecosystem management. However, existing studies have largely overlooked the refinement of EFZs at local scales, which hinders targeted and multi-scale ecosystem management. This study introduced a “two-step refinement zoning method” to address this gap, first using a self-organizing feature mapping method to delineate EFZs at a township scale, and then applying a hotspot overlay analysis to refine the resulting EFZs by designating them with different grades at the village scale. The proposed method was applied in Wuhan City, dividing it into five types of EFZs with different ES combinations and land use compositions. Furthermore, 5.23% of villages were identified as level I areas of EFZs, serving as advantageous areas of dominant ESs in the study area. On this basis, diversified management strategies and conservation priorities were proposed. This study provides a theoretical and methodological reference for terrestrial spatial planning and sustainable ecosystem management.

Urbanization, despite driving regional economic growth, has led to significant disparities in development levels among cities. Many studies have made valuable suggestions for ecological conservation in economically underdeveloped regions. However, for medium-level cities with large economic development needs, the question of how to strike a balance between development and conservation in land development patterns is a critical issue to be addressed. By integrating ecosystem services assessment models and land use prediction models, we proposed a framework for guiding future land-use strategies based on ecosystem service values, using Jiaxing City as a case study. Firstly, we assessed and mapped the current status of ecosystem services value. Then, we simulated the land use distribution pattern and ecosystem services value under three development strategies: inertial development, cropland protection, and ecological development. Eventually, we determined the optimal urban land development pattern. The results showed that the total ecosystem service value for Jiaxing is CNY 124.82 billion, with climate regulation, water conservation, and flood mitigation contributing the most. The ecological development strategy yields the highest service value, with a 0.81% increase compared to the current situation, while the cropland protection and inertial development strategies result in decreases of 0.73% and 10.93%, respectively. Furthermore, the ecological strategy expands high-value service areas, concentrated in the northern river network and southern hilly regions. These findings offer valuable insights for urban planners and policymakers in formulating sustainable strategies and integrating ecosystem service values into economic policies to promote urban development.

To achieve the transition of rural areas from traditional to modern, the visualization of rural landscape data and feature evaluations are essential. Landscape character assessment (LCA) is a well-established tool that was developed to assess and understand rural landscape features. In recent years, drones have become increasingly attractive for various applications and services due to their low costs and relative ease of operation. Unlike most previous studies that relied solely on drone-based remote sensing or visual esthetic evaluations, this study proposes an innovative assessment method based on landscape characteristic assessment (LCA) and oblique drone photography technology, supported by specific data and survey results. These include various landscape metrics, such as the Shannon diversity index (SHDI), Shannon evenness index (SHEI), vegetation coverage, landscape character zoning, and delineations of various ecologically sensitive areas. This method was applied to study Zhanqi Village in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China and revealed some unique characteristics of this village. By categorizing and describing the landscape features, the study makes judgments and decisions about them. This is a beneficial attempt to apply the scientific methods of landscape assessments to the production management of aerial drone surveys. This method provides a comprehensive framework for evaluating rural landscape features and demonstrates that the combination of LCA and oblique drone photography technology is feasible for rural landscape research. Additionally, this study emphasizes the need for further research to explore the potential application of this method in continuously evolving urban and rural environments in the future.
