Empirical Validation of a Biogas Plant Simulation Model and Analysis of Biogas Upgrading Potentials

Abstract: Biogas plants may support the transformation towards renewable-based and integrated energy systems by providing dispatchable co-generation as well as opportunities for biogas upgrading or power-to-X conversion. In this paper, a simulation model that comprises the main dynamics of the internal processes of a biogas plant is developed. Based on first-order kinetics of the anaerobic digestion process, the biogas production of an input feeding schedule of raw material can be estimated. The output of the plant in t… Show more

“…The boiler, together with the biogas plant, tie the electrical grid with the local district heating network. Withal, it is expected that in the nearest future the VPP will also aggregate a 1 MW/1 MWh stationary BESS, a MW-scale electrolyser, a fleet of electric vehicles, as well as RCL and ICL [94,95] The focus of the use case it given to the analytical and experimental investigation of flexibility potential of the biogas plant, power capping capabilities of wind turbines and the solar PV plant, energy management and control of the VPP, and holistic optimisation of the island's energy system to reduce curtailment of renewables and balance the grid [96,97]. The demo pilot in Madeira (INSULAE(3)) aims at expanding the existing EV charging infrastructure on the island with four 10 kW vehicle-to-grid (V2G) chargers and three 50 kW fast chargers, one of which is based on silicon carbide semiconductors.…”

“…An important role in hybrid and off-grid solutions [24,26,29,30,[33][34][35][36][37][38] and systems is played by energy storage units. The evolution of the energy market towards micro production of electrical energy and heat implicates certain problems with unpredictable energy production profiles and its balancing in hybrid systems.…”

“…Biogas plants operating on organic waste are at the heart of the reliable, low-carbon, multi-energy systems of the future [46]. As cogeneration units, biogas plants significantly contribute to further interconnection of future energy systems, acting as intermediaries, especially in the thermal domain [47].…”
