Empowered learning through microworlds and teaching methods: a text mining and meta-analysis-based systematic review

Abstract: Microworlds are simulations in computational environments where the student can manipulate objects and learn from those manipulations. Since their creation, they have been used in a wide range of academic areas to improve students learning from elementary school to college. However, their effectiveness is unclear since many studies do not measure the acquired knowledge after the use of microworlds but instead they focus on self-evaluation. Furthermore, it has not been clear whether its effect on learning is re… Show more

“…Cohen's d is a measure that represents an estimate of the number of subjects in the experimental group who are expected to exceed the medium value of the control group [8]. It has been used in meta‐analysis in several areas, such as education [10], and medical research [18], among others. Cohen's d takes advantage of using an unbiased estimative of true population variability, regardless of the rejection of the null hypotheses, and it is also less biased than Hedges' g measure [8].…”

“…In another domain, the Neurosynth Corpus [7] is created via text mining, namely by tying keyword mentions to fMRI images from a large sample of studies to assemble a library of neuroimaging representations associated with cognitive, physical, and emotional states. Additionally, text mining is leveraged to gather data for MA to identify xerostomia drug targets [8], evaluate the efficacy of educational software [9], and analyze treatment plans for addiction recovery [10] as other examples.…”

“…Las tipologías de estudio más comunes fueron la empírica y la teórica, por el contrario, las fuentes bibliográficas relacionadas con intervenciones cuasi experimentales y experiencias educativas son exiguas. Estos resultados son coincidentes con diversas revisiones sistemáticas, en las que impera la inclusión de estudios con diseños de investigación empíricos y teóricos (Alshammari, 2020;Costa et al, 2020;Klufas et al, 2020;Mohiuddin et al, 2020).…”
