Empowering Women and Building Sustainable Food Systems: A Case Study of Cuba's Local Agricultural Innovation Project

Abstract: Benítez et al. Cuba's PIAL Methodology locally-focused participatory initiatives and, finally, how it is building networks and partnerships that embed its work in institutional (e.g., government) settings at a variety of scales, thus helping to ensure use of local government funds for the work, and guaranteeing longevity independent of external funding.

“…The literature has also dealt with gender issues from different perspectives [174, [307][308][309][310]. While women play an essential role in the agri-food system, they generally have less power and representation in decision-making processes [307]. Most articles focused on women, but some addressed specific gender categories such as lesbians [308].…”

“…Different models of agriculture and food systems emphasize the role of the community and the importance of its active participation, such as community-supported agriculture [263,388,[389][390][391][392][393][394][395][396]397], community gardens [218,390,[398][399][400], community seed banks [196], community kitchens [390], and community-based fisheries [401]. This focus on participation led to the emergence of different participatory approaches that do not only cover the whole food chain (from production to consumption), but also associated activities such as participatory research [290,[402][403][404][405], participatory breeding [307,406], and participatory certification [407,408]. Besides participation and inclusiveness, accountability [409,410] and transparency [301,411,412] are central in the new governance arrangements for sustainable agri-food systems.…”

“…Como disciplina, la investigación agroecológica busca el desarrollo y sistematización del conocimiento en un esfuerzo para entender de una mejor manera las relaciones socioecológicas que caracterizan a los sistemas agroecológicos. En años recientes, la agroecología ha captado el interés internacional como un mecanismo principal para lograr un desarrollo sostenible, con beneficios ecológicos, a la vez que restaura y conserva los recursos naturales tales como el suelo, agua y biodiversidad (Benítez et al, 2020).…”

“…As a discipline, the agroecological research seeks to develop and systematize knowledge in an effort to better understand the socio-ecological relationships that characterize agroecological systems. In recent years, agroecology has gained international attention as a key mechanism for achieving a sustainable development, with ecological benefits, as it restores and conserves natural resources including soil, water and biodiversity (Benítez et al, 2020).…”
