Enabling Smart Grid Applications with ICN

Abstract: We have harnessed the salient features of information-centric networking (ICN) and implemented a communication infrastructure, called C-DAX, for supporting smart grid applications. We will demonstrate the operations of C-DAX both in a laboratory setup and a real field trial that involves the deployment of C-DAX in a live electricity grid in the Netherlands. This demo will showcase the capabilities of C-DAX, highlighting how ICN satisfies stringent smart grid application requirements.

“…Besides, ICN can substantially enhance the quality, and reduce communication and security complexity of smart charging of electric vehicles [132]. The benefits of ICN for smart grids have been showcased in both laboratory setup and real field trial in a live electricity grid in Netherlands [133]. An information-centric advanced metering infrastructure for measuring, collecting, storing, analyzing, and exploiting energy usage data in smart grids was presented in [134].…”

“…The operation and, more importantly, the protection of distribution grids are thus increasingly reliant on a robust and efficient communication infrastructure that must provide seamless and timely communication service, such that full observability of power conditions is maintained at all times [8]. In fact, to cater for the challenges of next generation smart grids, there are already work in the literature to apply the latest information-centric networking paradigm for smart grid applications (e.g., [9], [10], [11]). …”

“…Although ICN is an emerging technology, it already shows some promising results in the areas of efficient content delivery [44,49,56,60], host mobility [9,53,55], smart grids [14,27,31], satellite networks [16,33,43], and network security [5,21,22]. On the other hand, there are not many works that investigate the applicability of ICN principles in wireless community networks (WCN).…”
