Encapsulation of clove oil in nanostructured lipid carriers from natural waxes: Preparation, characterization and in vitro evaluation of the cholinesterase enzymes

Abstract: Eugenol is a phenolic compound largely found in the clove essential oil that possesses promising biological activity. However, its low water solubility is a major concern and encapsulation is an alternative to improve water affinity. The objective of this work was to produce nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) by hot homogenization/ultrasound emulsification and to evaluate the effect of free and encapsulated clove oil on the in vitro cholinesterase enzymes modulation using Drosophila melanogaster (DM) tissue. … Show more

“…Other researchers reported similar results for NLCs containing the EO of Cuminun cyminum , with EE values ranging from 80 to 92% and using cocoa butter as a solid lipid as well [ 43 ]. It was demonstrated in other studies that NLCs are particularly useful for the encapsulation of lipophilic compounds, such as EO, with an EE normally greater than 70% [ 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 ]. The PEOC ranged from 1.37 (F13) to 3.01 (F10) mg PEO per gram of NLC.…”

“…Additionally, beeswax-crodamol nanoparticles showed a higher clove encapsulation efficiency (66 ± 1%–63 ± 0%) when compared with carnauba wax-crodamol ones (60 ± 2%–58 ± 0%): again, the presence of the liquid lipid is decisive. In both situations, the formulations showed no decrease in encapsulated clove percentages after 30 days storage, demonstrating the great suitability of these component in the formulation of NLC for clove delivery [ 199 ]. The wound-healing application of thymol-loaded NLC was recently investigated [ 200 ].…”

“…They are often tested in vitro based on Ellman’s method using AChE extracted from electric eel and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) from equine serum. Nonetheless, efforts were made to determine in vitro activity using the parasite Cotylophoron cotylophorum [ 34 ] and the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster [ 35 ]. Ex vivo AChE activity was also measured, revealing no significant activity from S. cumini [ 36 ].…”
