Encapsulation of Ethylene Gas into Granular Cold-Water-Soluble Starch: Structure and Release Kinetics

Abstract: Ethylene gas was introduced into granular cold-water-soluble (GCWS) starches using a solid encapsulation method. The morphological and structural properties of the novel inclusion complexes (ICs) were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and Raman spectroscopy. The V-type single helix of GCWS starches was formed through controlled gelatinization and ethanol precipitation and was approved to host ethylene gas. The controlled release characteristics of ICs were also investigate… Show more

“…The X-ray diffractometer (Rigaku, Tokyo, Japan) was operated at 40 kV and40 mA with Cu Kα radiation (λ=0.154 nm). The sample powder was packed tightly in a rectangular glass cell and scanned over the range of 4-35° 2θ angles at a rate of 2°/min [20]. The relative crystallinity of the samples was calculated using the following equation.…”

“…and summarized in Table 2, including DP at the maximum of each peak (termed DP AP1 , DP AP2 , DP AM1 , and DP AM2 ) and the height of each maximum relative to that of AP1 (termed h AP2/AP1 , h AM1/AP1 , and h AM2/AP1 ). The DP at the maximum of each peak reflects the relative size of chains in each group of branches, and the height ratio of each peak maximum to AP1 represents the relative amount of chains in each group of branches (Shi, Fu, Tan, Huang, & Zhang, 2017). The amylose content was calculated by the ratio of the area under the curve (AUC) of amylose branches to that of the overall SEC weight of debranched starch.…”

“…However, there is a unique relationship between size and molecular weight for linear polymers, including the individual chains obtained from whole starch after exposure to a debranching enzyme. The distribution of the number of monomer units in individual chains -the chain-length distribution (CLD), which is the molecular fine structure -was obtained by first debranching the starch with a debranching enzyme, then characterizing the resulting chains by SEC, as described previously (Shi, Fu, Tan, Huang & Zhang, 2017;Tikapunya, Zou, Yu, Powell, Fox, Furtado, Henry & Gilbert, 2017;Yu et al, 2017).…”
