This study aimed to develop non-metal elements for doping carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with nitrogen and sulfur (N, S-CQDs), which loaded inside hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) in order to effectively remove methylene blue dye (MB) from an aqueous solution. The histidine and cysteine amino acids were used as the source for synthesis N, S-CQDs through the hydrothermal method. Morphology and structure of the N, S-CQDs, and adsorbent (N, S-CQDs/HMS) were characterized by using different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The adsorption parameters such as adsorbent dosage (0.25–1 g/L), pH (2–10), contact time (15–75 min), and initial MB dye concentration (20–300 mg/L) were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of MB were determined at 370.4 mg/g and 97%, respectively, under optimum conditions at 303 K. The adsorption isotherm studies were fitted with the Freundlich isotherm equation, and the dye removal kinetics of the adsorbent followed the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption process had exothermic and spontaneous behavior. The removal of MB next to the Rhodamine B and Reactive Black 5 dyes indicated that the N, S-CQDs/HMS had excellent selective behavior for MB absorption. This prepared adsorbent could be well recycled with suitable activity after four repeated adsorption–desorption cycles. Results revealed that the porous characters, surface area, charge properties, reduction in the bandgap, and quantum yield of the N, S-CQDs/HMS were essential factors that affected dye adsorption.

In this study, red mud (RM) was used as a support for LaFeO 3 to prepare LaFeO 3 -RM via the ultrasonic-assisted sol–gel method for the removal of methylene blue (MB) assisted with bisulfite (BS) in the aqueous solution. Characterization by scanning electron microscopy and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method indicated that LaFeO 3 -RM exhibited a large surface area and porous structure with a higher pore volume (i.e. 10 times) compared with the bulk LaFeO 3 . The XRD, XPS and FTIR results revealed that the support of porous RM not only dispersed LaFeO 3 particles but also increased Fe oxidation capability, oxygen-containing functional groups and chemically adsorbed oxygen (from 44.3% to 90.3%) of LaFeO 3 -RM, which improved the catalytic performance in structure and chemical composition. MB was removed through the synergistic effect of adsorption and catalysis, with MB molecules first absorbed on the surface and then degraded. The removal efficiency was 88.19% in the LaFeO 3 -RM/BS system under neutral conditions but only 27.09% in the LaFeO 3 /BS system. The pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of LaFeO 3 -RM was six times higher than that of LaFeO 3 . Fe(III) in LaFeO 3 -RM played a key role in the activation of BS to produce SO 4 ⋅ − by the redox cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II). Dissolved oxygen was an essential factor for the generation of SO 4 ⋅ − . This work provides both a new approach for using porous industrial waste to improve the catalytic performance of LaFeO 3 and guidance for resource utilization of RM in wastewater treatment.

Novel magnetic hybrid nanomaterials 1 (LaFeO3.Fe3O4@SiO2‐NH2/PW12) were synthesized by supporting phosphotungstic acid (H3PW12O40; PW12) on LaFeO3.Fe3O4 nanomaterials through sono‐assisted method. The synthesized nanomaterials were fully characterized by using FT‐IR, XRD, UV–vis, BET‐BJH, VSM, SEM, and TEM analyses. FT‐IR, XRD, and UV–vis confirmed successful synthesis of nanomaterials. The SEM and TEM images revealed spherical morphology with core‐shell structure for hybrid nanomaterials 1. VSM results confirmed the magnetic property of hybrid nanomaterials 1 and suggested it as easily recyclable photocatalyst for removal of organic dyes from aqueous solution. The photocatalytic activity of hybrid nanomaterials 1 has been studied over the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) solution under UV–vis light irradiation. Importantly the hybrid nanomaterials 1 showed outstanding degradation efficiency for MB solution in comparison with bare LaFeO3.Fe3O4 and PW12. The photocatalytic activity was enhanced mainly due to the high efficiency in separation of electron–hole pairs induced by the remarkable synergistic effects of LaFeO3.Fe3O4 and PW12 semiconductors. After the photocatalytic reaction, the nanocomposite can be easily separated from the reaction solution and reused several times without loss of its photocatalytic activity. Trapping experiments indicated that hole (hVB+) and •OH radicals were the main reactive species for dye degradation in the present photocatalytic system. On the basis of the experimental results and estimated band gaps, the mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity was proposed.
