Encrusted Uretero-Pyelitis Caused by Corynebacterium urealyticum: Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract: We report the case of a 70-year-old female patient with solitary functioning left kidney and encrusted uretero-pyelitis caused by Corynebacterium urealyticum, which was treated by antibiotic therapy and oral acidification with L-methionine. We review the literature for similarly reported cases.

“…In the treatment of encrusted cystitis and pyelitis caused by C. urealyticum, favorable outcomes have been obtained with vancomycin and teicoplanin. (3,(28)(29)(30)(31)33,34,40,45,46) In some cases, other antimicrobials such as fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, rifampicin, linezolid and macrolides have been used with varying results. (23,26,27,33,35) Since bacterial urease plays a crucial role in the genesis of struvite calculi, inhibitors of this enzyme, such as acetohydroxamic acid, have been used as adjuvant treatment with promising results.…”

The relative abundance of pathogenic bacteria in the A-HU, W-HU, A-WU, A-WU*, A-ER, A-ER*, W-ER, and A-XI sites was 3.29%, 4.12%, 7.15%, 12.44%, 15.78%, 8.01%, 3.00%, and 9.01%, respectively.…”
