In developing countries where comprehensive policies addressing the environmental impact of ELV have been implemented, this mixed-methods study examines the complex relationship between knowledge and social acceptance of ELV policies in developing countries. The study integrates a quantitative survey with 150 participants and a qualitative phase featuring indepth interviews with 15 individuals. The quantitative survey explores participants' understanding and acceptance of various aspects of ELV policies, revealing diverse knowledge levels on environmental, economic, public health, safety, and technological dimensions. Notably, there is a solid willingness to comply with these policies, highlighting their perceived importance in safeguarding environmental and public health. The qualitative phase delves deeper, uncovering factors influencing social acceptance, such as limited awareness, positive attitudes, and considerations related to economic, safety, and health concerns. This study emphasizes the critical role of knowledge in shaping the social acceptance of ELV policies, demonstrating that an informed public is more inclined to have favorable attitudes and greater acceptance. By blending quantitative and qualitative insights, we obtain a holistic understanding of the interplay between knowledge and social acceptance concerning ELV policies. This comprehensive perspective is invaluable for policymakers and stakeholders, underscoring the necessity of well-informed strategies to boost public comprehension and acceptance of ELV policies. The findings indicate that effective communication and education initiatives could significantly enhance the implementation and effectiveness of ELV policies in developed nations, suggesting a pivotal role for targeted educational and awareness campaigns in achieving policy goals.

Over the last couple of decades, the automobile sector in India has seen dramatic growth, following the phenomenal booming of engenders rapid proliferation of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs). Therefore, efficient and sustainable handling of ELVs is paramount. India has been striving to establish a practical regulatory framework to handle ELVs sustainably. This study explores India’s current ELV recycling system to promote sustainable development. Subsequently, this article evaluates the present ELV recycling system to determine the existing issues in ELV recycling to prevent failure and enhance and standardize the processes involved in ELV recycling to achieve the optimum standard for product and process quality. This paper proposes pragmatic frameworks and offers recommendations for setting up an efficient ELV recycling system to resolve current issues and expedite sustainable development. This study has been performed through a mixed-method approach; a literature and policy review accompanied by detailed structured interviews with major stakeholders and industrial visits. This investigation reveals that India’s ELV recycling system is at the embryonic stage and struggling against numerous inherent impediments. However, the proposed frameworks, together with practical recommendations, provide a paradigm for expediting materials recycling from ELVs and resolving perennial issues. This research may assist the government of India in implementing any upcoming regulatory and legal framework.

In light of the rapidly advancing Indian automotive sector, the issue of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) has emerged as a matter of significant concern. Particularly critical aspects encompass recycling procedures, environmental impacts, and social implications. With the inevitable proliferation of ELVs anticipated in the next decade, the imperative for effective and sustainable ELV management becomes paramount, necessitating a comprehensive analysis of India's burgeoning ELV recycling landscape. The present study endeavors to scrutinize India's ELV recycling system from technological, social, and economic perspectives, constituting a preliminary step toward a judicious evaluation of sustainability in ELV recycling and performing a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis to appraise India's ELV recycling framework comprehensively. Furthermore, the ensuing recommendations shall furnish invaluable insights for the development and implementation of forthcoming regulatory and legal frameworks that adequately incorporate the economic, social, environmental, and technological aspects of ELV recycling in India. To accomplish this endeavor, the study has diligently conducted in-depth interviews with pertinent stakeholders, undertaken rigorous field investigations, and administered comprehensive surveys. Additionally, an exhaustive examination of the existing literature has been undertaken to probe the current ELV recycling system, address lingering challenges, and proffer recommendations to elevate the ELV recycling infrastructure. The outcomes of this study may assist in developing deeper comprehension of India's ELV recycling system while furnishing pragmatic recommendations to fortify its efficacy.
