End-to-end simulation of the image stability for the airborne telescope SOFIA

Abstract: To provide astronomers access to infrared wavelength unavailable from the ground the airborne telescope SOFIA is in development. This paper focuses on the image stability of the telescope, its modelling and simulation. The operation ot the telescope under the harsh environmental conditions in the aircraft makes the prediction of the image stability during the design process necessary. For this purpose an integrated mathematical simulation model, which includes the optics. the structural dynamics and the contro… Show more

“…Provisions on the aircraft door like shearlayer control will reduce wind loads acting on the TA to the possible extent. But residual loads are acting within a wide range offrequency [3] on the structure having impact on the pointing stability. Besides these performance -relevant loads, aircraft -induced loads caused by rotational and I or translational accelerations are acting on the TA.…”

“…System analysis ofthe entire TA including bearing, vibration Isolation System, Science instruments etc. will be performed by the systemleader for SOFIA TA [3] to find out the influence on the pointing stability. Extensive eigenfrequency analysis was performed to find out sensitivity ofthe structural assembly against design changes such as variation ofmass distribution within the STA or increase ofstiffness in particular areas.…”

“…For any airborne sensing platform, the pointing accuracy is dependent on and can be limited to the accuracy of the onboard attitude solution [1,2]. As such, a key to high pointing accuracy is a robust attitude-determination system.…”
