“…Variation in aspect and topography within the Soutpansberg results in strong latitudinal, longitudinal and elevational gradients in climate and vegetation. Owing to a rain shadow on the northern slopes, precipitation varies from 367 mm on the northern slopes to greater than 3000 mm (of which one third falls as mist) on the southeastern slopes [33]. Most of the Soutpansberg is covered by various types of savannah including thickets (Soutpansberg Mountain Bushveld), with small patches of temperate grasslands occurring at higher elevations (Soutpansberg Sourveld) and small patches of Mistbelt forest occurring at the bases of cliffs on the southern slopes (Soutpansberg Mistbelt Forest) [38].…”

“…Huxman et al 2005) and cascading impacts on biodiversity (Bond 2008). Consensus on the primary and secondary drivers has not been reached, and it is suggested that the process is a dynamic one with multiple drivers likely interacting and changing over time (O'Connor et al 2014 (Hahn 2002(Hahn , 2006.…”

“…Everything is connected.'' Several of the Zwifho are the sites of considerable biodiversity and home to endemic species (Hahn, 2017;Symes, Venter, & Perrin, 2000) and traditional practices have protected this biodiversity (Mutshinyalo & Siebert, 2010). For decades, traditional sacred rituals have been performed at these sites by several clans chosen by Nwali, such as the Netshidizhe clan of Zwifho zwa Thathe (sacred natural site of Thathe).…”
