Endobronchial Leiomyoma: A case report with cryoprobe extraction and review of literature

Abstract: Large airway tumors are uncommon, accounting for about 0.6% of all pulmonary tumors [ [1] , [2] , [3] ]. The majority of these tumors (80–90%) are malignant, represented primarily by squamous cell carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma [ 2 , 4 ]. Benign central airway tumors are less common and are generally comprised of hamartomas and papillomas. Tracheobronchial leiomyomas are exceedingly rare, … Show more

“…Episodes of recurrence have also been reported in tracheobronchial leiomyomas after tumor removal, whether with laser ablation or APC ( 8 , 16 , 19 ). Limited cases and comparative studies may not conclusively prove this, but these instances highlight potential limitations in the width and depth of the current endoscopic approaches ( 20 ).…”

“…Surgical resection is a widely accepted treatment modality for primary endobronchial leiomyomas. Bronchoplasty, sleeve resection, and pneumonectomy were used to treat primary endobronchial leiomyomas before the wide availability of bronchoscopic techniques (10)(11)(12)(13). Currently, individual or combined endoscopic techniques are considered safe and effective alternatives for managing benign bronchial tumors, including cryoresection, electrocautery snare, laser, and APC (14).…”

“… 2 CT thorax findings are homogeneous endoluminal lesions with intraluminal growth. 1 Bronchoscopic vision shows well-defined lesions. Most are usually submucous or pedunculated.…”

“…Endobronchial leiomyoma is an uncommon benign tumor (2%) with slow-growing. 1 The most frequent symptoms are cough (53%), dyspnea (47%) hemoptisis and recurrent pneumonia. 2 CT thorax findings are homogeneous endoluminal lesions with intraluminal growth.…”
