Endobronchial ultrasound-guided lymph node biopsy with transbronchial needle forceps: a pilot study

Abstract: One limitation of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is the size of the available needles, frequently yielding only cells for cytological examination. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of newly developed needle forceps to obtain tissue for the histological diagnosis of enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes.Patients with enlarged, positron emission tomography (PET)-positive lymph nodes were included. The transbronchial needle forceps (TBNF),… Show more

“…Today, with the introduction of real-time endobronchial ultrasound-guided TBNA (EBUS-TBNA) and transesophageal endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration, a higher number of patients is diagnosed with sarcoidosis [3][4][5]. Currently, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is extensively used for mediastinal sampling; however, conventional bronchoscopic techniques are still the first choice in the diagnostic algorithm of sarcoidosis cases in many centers [1].…”

“…[22] Histological confirmation and subtyping of lymphoma remains the standard precondition for chemotherapy. TBNA/EBUS-TBNA cell block samples [23] and EBUS transbronchial needle forceps biopsies [24] may overcome these deficiencies. The only study done in the last 10 years evaluating the diagnostic yield of conventional (blind) TBNA in the diagnosis of lymphoma (using cytology and/or histology needles) was by Fernández-Villar et al [25] in 2010, on 15 patients with lymphoma.…”

“…A necessidade de material histológico de forma simples e eficaz gera a invenção de novas técnicas e equipamentos, que se encontram em fase de avaliação em alguns estudos científicos. [1][2][3][4] Descreve-se o caso clínico de uma doente com lesão mediastínica sólida em que se realizaram pela primeira vez biópsias transtraqueais com intuito diagnóstico.…”
