Endocrine disrupting‐chemicals and biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer after prostatectomy: A cohort study in Guadeloupe (French West Indies)

Abstract: Previous studies have suggested that exposure to environmental chemicals with hormonal properties, also called endocrine disrupting chemicals, may be involved in the occurrence of prostate cancer (PCa). Such exposure may also influence the treatment outcome as it is still present at the time of diagnosis, the beginning of therapy, and beyond. We followed 326 men in Guadeloupe (French West Indies) who underwent radical prostatectomy as primary treatment of localized PCa. We analyzed the relationship between exp… Show more

“…In 2009, CLD was added to the list of persistent organic pollutants in the Stockholm Convention, banning its production and use worldwide. Studies suggest exposure to CLD may be linked to higher occurrence of prostate cancer and to impaired cognitive and motor development in young children [1,[12][13][14]. Watershed modelling predicts that CLD will remain in soils for decades or even centuries because of its stability and affinity for soil organic matter, providing a long term source of contamination to the aquatic environment [2].…”

“…Regarding environmental factors, few studies have been able to focus on chlordecone, an insecticide close to DDT, yet known to be a human carcinogen . Only two solid studies have found an association between increased chlordecone plasma concentrations and the risk of PCa . More studies are requested to confirm the impact of the chlordecone on the health of Caribbean men.…”
