Endocrine responses of ovariectomized ewes to i.c.v. infusion of urocortin

Abstract: Urocortin is a novel corticotropin-releasing factor-like peptide, first isolated from the rat midbrain, which has anorexigenic properties, possibly associated with its involvement in the stress axis. Urocortin has been implicated in blood pressure regulation, ACTH release and feed intake, but its role as an integral component of the reproduction-nutrition axis has not been examined. The present experiment was designed to determine the effects of i.c.v. infusion of urocortin on feed intake and endocrine profile… Show more

“…Effects on ACTH are most likely due to Ucn-1's CRF-like activity via pituitary CRF-R1s. This is in keeping with previous work showing Ucn-1-induced release of ACTH from isolated pituitary cells (1) and increased plasma ACTH and cortisol in animals (21,22,44).…”

“…While exogenous urocortin 1 administration can stimulate pituitary growth hormone release [39], the mechanism by which IGF-1 production is stimulated in Ucn3 + mice is more likely to be paracrine. Neither serum growth hormone nor hepatic IGF-1 levels were increased in Ucn3 + mice.…”

“…This action is likely via the CRH type 2 receptor, as urocortin, the endogenous ligand for the CRH type 2 receptor, stimulated LH concentrations and decreased feed intake in OVX ewes (Holmberg et al. ).…”
