Endodontic retreatment: clinical comparison of reciprocating systems versus rotary system in disinfecting root canals

Abstract: All systems tested were effective to remove cultivable bacteria and endotoxin in endodontic retreatment. As no differences among systems were observed, it is possible to suggest that clinicians should choose the preferred technique to perform endodontic.

“…Recently, the reciprocating systems, originally designed for root canal preparation, have also been recommended for the removal of filling materials, as they allow advancing toward the apex. Single-file reciprocating systems are as effective as the conventional, multi-file rotary systems specifically designed for gutta-percha and sealer removal, yet they are faster (9)(10)(11)(12)(13). However, regardless of the technique, irritants such as root-filling materials, dentin chips, irrig-ants, and microorganisms and their byproducts, usually extrude at least to some degree into the periapical tissues (11,(13)(14)(15).…”

“…After screening titles and abstracts, 20 articles were included for review of the full text. One study evaluated endotoxin reduction after root canal instrumentation in root canal retreatment (19), while two studies evaluated the same after root canal instrumentation in root canal treatment (20,21). Three articles were included for further analysis to inform this review.…”
