Endogenous circadian rhythm in the river puffer fish Takifugu obscurus

et al.

Abstract: Oxygen consumption rate of 8 to 12 mo old river puffer fish Takifugu obscurus was determined using a n automatic intermittent-flow-respirometer (AIFR). During the experiments, the fish were not fed and were kept in constant darkness and at constant temperature to avoid any extrinsic disturbances. It was clearly demonstrated that this species has a strong endogenous circadian rhythm in its instantaneous rates of oxygen consumption, although there were weak mlnor peaks of 11 4 to 11.7 h intervals. This endogenou… Show more

“…The total daytime oxygen demand was approximately 20% higher than at nighttime in surface morphs, which concurs with the magnitude reported for other fish species [21], [26]. In contrast, Pachón fish had a steady metabolic rate when held under the constant dark conditions that simulate a cave.…”

“…Circadian rhythms were also exhibited by mullet (Marais 1978;Shekk 1986), juvenile flounder (Liu et al 1997), and unfed juvenile Mediterranean yellowtail Seriola dumerili (De la Gándara et al 2002). In the river puffer fish Takifugu obscures a circadian rhythm in oxygen consumption was attributed to endogenous origin (Kim et al 1997). Activity patterns of fish may be related to feeding times or nutritional status (Boulos and Terman 1980;Mistlberger 1994;Sánchez-Vázquez et al 1995;Via et al 1999;Boujard et al 2000), as increased activity prior to the critical time limit of food absence raises the chance of finding a new food patch (Méndez and Wieser 1993).…”
