Endogenous Double-Stranded RNA

Abstract: The birth of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) is closely associated with the presence and activation of repetitive elements in the genome. The transcription of endogenous retroviruses as well as long and short interspersed elements is not only essential for evolving lncRNAs but is also a significant source of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). From an lncRNA-centric point of view, the latter is a minor source of bother in the context of the entire cell; however, dsRNA is an essential threat. A viral infection is assoc… Show more

“…The data that p150 is key to negatively regulating interferon responses and that loss of function variants the Zα domain are associated with type I interferonopathies provide strong evidence for this mechanism. The model incorporates many elements of previous proposals on how MDA5 discriminates nonself from self that are based on the localization, structure, and availability of dsRNA [54][55][56][57][58]. None of these earlier models completely fit with the data.…”

“…This observation contrasts with the accumulation of repetitive elements on the X Chromosome (Komissarov et al 2011). The significant contribution of Alu and LINE-1 elements to dsRNA formation in somatic cells (Sadeq et al 2021) may again point to different biological roles of dsRNA formation in germ and somatic cells.…”

“…Some regions are the main targets of TEs, probably because of their accessibility [ 88 , 89 , 90 ]. In addition, patchy distribution due to the accessibility effect could be reinforced by the existence of low recombination rates, leading us to consider some of these regions as TE graveyards [ 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 ].…”
