Endogenous Erythroid Colony Formation by Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells from Patients with Myelofibrosis and Polycythemia Vera

Abstract: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with polycythemia vera or myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia were studied for their erythroid colony growth characteristics in plasma clot cultures. In both diseases, erythroid colonies formed early in culture in the absence of added erythropoietin (endogenous colonies). In no instance did early, endogenous colony formation occur with peripheral blood cells from normals or patients with secondary polycythemia.
