Endometrial Thickness in 1,500 Asymptomatic Postmenopausal Women Not on Hormone Replacement Therapy

Abstract: Objective: To determine the normal endometrial thickness (ET) on transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) of asymptomatic postmenopausal women not on hormone replacement therapy. A subgroup that was determined to be suspicious for having an endometrial polyp was compared with the remainder. Methods: This prospective study selected 1,500 consecutive asymptomatic postmenopausal women receiving TVUS assessment from January to August 2010. ET was recorded. Results were divided into those with a normal-appearing lining (n = … Show more

“…Out of the 570 cases, we selected 320 which satisfied the inclusion criteria. These women either complained of postmenopausal bleeding or their endometrial thickness was >5 mm as measured by transvaginal ultrasound [8]. Menopause was defined as spontaneous cessation of menses for ≥12 months.…”

“…The first test applied in these patients is transvaginal ultrasound, which allows measuring endometrial thickness. However, hysteroscopy is believed to be the first-line diagnostic tool for the recognition of endometrial pathologies [1,6,7,8]. Asymptomatic postmenopausal women with a thickened endometrium found by ultrasound are also subjected to hysteroscopy, since the diagnostic value of endometrial thickness has not yet been documented [6,9].…”

“…with more than 20 years of experience in hysteroscopic surgery to avoid interoperator variability. As initial follow-up, all patients were subjected to TVUS and SIS, and, in the case of subjects with endometrial thickness greater than 5 mm, which is suspicious for polyp [17], even to a consented outpatient diagnostic hysteroscopy by well-trained sonographers and clinicians (S.R. and C.B.…”
