Endometriosis and uterine leiomyomata with ovarian granulosa cell tumour

Abstract: We report the first known case of right endometrial cyst and multiple uterine leiomyomata complicated by an ovarian granulosa cell tumour of adult type. A 42 year old woman had an adult type left granulosa cell tumour. Laparoscopy 13 years earlier had revealed a small endometrial implant on the peritoneum, without uterine leiomyomata or bilateral ovarian tumours. Findings in this case suggest that the aetiology of endometriosis and uterine leiomyomata are related to the presence of an oestrogen-secreting neopl… Show more

“…In the present study, a 40-year-old women diagnosed clinically with dysfunctional uterine bleeding and leiomyoma when subjected to HPE revealed a coincidental ovarian GCT, simple hyperplastic endometrium, and intramural leiomyoma similar to a case report by Kurioka et al . [ 35 ] Hence, the authors emphasize on imperative submission of all hysterectomy specimens for histopathology, thorough sampling, and diligent quest for associated pathologies in routine hysterectomy specimens, few of which may need further management and surveillance for the patient's well-being.…”

“…[19] There are two case reports of rapid growth of both fibroids and endometriosis, and this has been suggested to be a result of a hyperestrogenic state. [2122] In addition, the role of estrogens is supported by the fact that neither fibroids nor endometriosis appear before the age of onset of fertility, and during the menopause the symptoms of both diseases diminish. [7]…”

“…In cases of pelvic endometriosis, Matsushima et al, (2002) found a large number of macrophages using an autosmear method for the tubal collected cells. The etiology of endometriosis and uterine leiomyomata are related to the presence of an estrogen -secreting neoplasm and that the presence of a state of hyperestrogenemia due to granulosa cell tumor over several years might have stimulated the development the endometriosis and leiomyomata (Kurioka et al, 1998). Ferrara et al, (1993) described, in a patient affected by an ovarian granulosa cell tumor (adult type), a case of non-cicatrical endometriosis of the thoracic skin.…”
