Endoparasite Infections in Pet and Zoo Birds in Italy

Abstract: Faecal samples were individually collected from pet (n = 63) and zoo (n = 83) birds representing 14 orders and 63 species. All the samples were examined by faecal flotation technique. In a subgroup of samples (n = 75), molecular assays were also used to detect Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia duodenalis cysts. Overall, 35.6% of the birds harboured parasites (42.2% of zoo birds and 27% of pet birds), including Strongyles-Capillarids (8.9%), Ascaridia (6.8%), Strongyles (5.5%), G. duodenalis Assemblage A (5.3… Show more

“…As previously reported (Lee and others 2005, Balicka-Ramisz and others 2007, Papini and others 2012), and also seen in this study, some psittacines were infected by Heterakis , Strongyloides and strongyle nematodes.…”

“…The prevalence of parasite may also vary according to geographical area, habitat conditions and the avian species. These infections may be aggravated in situations such as high population density, stress and adaptation to new environment or prolonged periods in a confined space (Papini et al 2012). In addition to the species found in this experiment, Costa et al (2010) also listed Balantidium coli and Cryptococcus neoformans having a great importance in Brazil.…”

“…Probably, giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis spread more easily in overcrowded environments or stressful conditions, i.e. animals kept in zoos (Papini et al 2012), than in small or medium-sized colonies like these examined in our study.…”

“…Concerning parasitological investigations, our samples proved to be negative for enteric protozoa while several studies have detected C. parvum and C. hominis, and the zoonotic assemblages of G. duodenalis (A and B) in faeces of various avian species indicating that birds might serve as mechanical vectors of cysts and oocysts and as possible sources of these infections in animals and humans (Graczyk et al 2008, Abreu-Acosta et al 2009, Majewska et al 2009, Papini et al 2012, Reboredo-Fernandez et al 2015. At present, little information is available concerning the role played by pigeons in the zoonotic transmission of these pathogens.…”
