“…In this study, the distribution of gastrointestinal helminth parasites in the fishes showed a clear preference for the intestine and stomach as sites of attachment which could be attributed to the availability of food in these regions. The highest prevalence of parasites in the intestine implies that it is a more preferred predilection site; this could be due to the favourable conditions that enhance their survival (Owolabi, 2008). Similar finding were reported by Auta et al (1999) and Emere (2000), Aliyu & Solomon (2012).…”

“…The nematodes were recovered from both the stomach and intestine, whereas the cestode showed preference for the intestine. Nematodes have relatively developed alimentary canal and could easily move around any area of the host alimentary canal to feed on digested and semidigested food, whereas, cestodes lack alimentary system and are dependent on digested food of the host which is then absorbed through the body surfaces (Owolabi, 2008). These could probably account for their preference for these sites.…”

“…The endoparasite encountered in seven species of bagrid fishes have been implicated as causative agent of various debilities in several fish species in tropical freshwater. This is in line with the findings of Owolabi (2008). Injuries associated with points of attachment of these endoparasites among many fishes also serve as entry point for secondary infection with opportunistic bacteria and fungi and thereby compromising the health status of their host.…”

“…Omnivory or euryphagy is a characteristic feature of ubiquitous fishes (Lowe-McConnell 1975, Welcomme 1979, 1985 and explains S. membranaceus's wide distribution, a phenomenon reported also for other mochokid catfishes (Olatunde 1989, Owolabi and Omotosho 1999, Araoye and Jeje 1999. Therefore the overwhelming presence of S. membranaceus in Jebba lake appears to be consequent on the wide variety and adaptiveness to whatever natural diets that are present in the lake; and coupled with the potential for rapid growth impetus and high fecundity (Owolabi 2005) make S. membranaceus suited for culture in freshwater ponds.…”

“…They command a higher market value than other species of the genus. In Jebba lake, S. membranaceus is the dominant species, occupying unique and prominent position in the commercial fisheries of the lake (Owolabi 2005). It is highly relished either fresh or smoke-dried.…”
