Endophytic bacterium Pseudomonas protegens suppresses mycelial growth of Botryosphaeria dothidea and decreases its pathogenicity to postharvest fruits

Abstract: Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.), one of the most economically important fruits widely consumed worldwide, has been suffering from apple ring rot caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea, which dramatically affects its quality and yield. In the present study, we demonstrated that Pseudomonas protegens, isolated from Chinese leek (Allium tuberosum), significantly suppressed the mycelial growth and propagation of B. dothidea, respectively, further displayed a considerably inhibitory effect on the apple ring rot of postha… Show more

“…and B. velezensis have also demonstrated their efficacy against fungal trunk diseases in other crops, such as grapevine, 37,39,55 as well as in the control of apple and pear ring rot disease caused by B. dothidea. 48,[74][75][76] Isolation of endophytic bacteria from healthy, asymptomatic trees, growing in an infested orchard has been described as a powerful technic to obtain bacterial species to be used as (A) (B) Figure 3. Severity of symptoms (A) length of the lesions (B) on almond plants cv.…”

“…The biocontrol potential of beneficial Pseudomonas spp. has been extensively investigated through antibiosis, competition, and elicitation of induced systemic resistance (ISR) ( Balthazar et al., 2022a ; Huang et al., 2022 ). Notably, Pseudomonas fluorescens ZX had ability to protect postharvest citrus fruits against blue and green molds, caused by Penicillium italicum and Penicillium digitatum , respectively ( Wang et al., 2021 ).…”
