Entomopathogenic fungi can be a useful resource for controlling insect vectors of citrus plant pathogens, such as the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) associated with huanglongbing or the citrus root weevil (Diaprepes abbreviatus) associated with the spread of Phytophtora spp. In this study, Cordyceps fumosorosea (Cfr) was investigated in planta as a potential endophytic entomopathogenic fungus and various inoculation techniques were used to determine if it would colonize the Carrizo citrange (Citrus × insitorum) seeds and plants. The four inoculation methodologies evaluated were seed soaking, stem injection, foliar spray, and soil drench. Seed immersion trials demonstrated that the roots of the Carrizo citrange plant can be inoculated successfully with Cfr. Stem injection, foliar spray, and soil drench also provided successful inoculation of Cfr. However, this fungus was only endophytic in the plant stem. Sand cores indicated that Cfr moved down through the sand column and was able to inoculate the roots. Given the prevalence of Cfr in the soil during the drench experiment, and that the fungus was able to colonize Carrizo citrange roots through seed immersion, this finding provides evidence of the potential endophytism of this fungus when applied to citrus plant species.

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) are natural enemies which affect insect population and have long been recognized as biological control agents against many insect pests. Some isolates have also been established as endophytes, benefiting their host plants without causing any symptoms or negative effects. Here we demonstrated two entomopathogenic fungal species, Isariajavanica (Frieder. & Bally) Samson & Hywel-jone 2005 and Purpureocillium lilacinum (Thom) Luangsa-ard, Hou-braken, Hywel-Jones & Samson (2011) as endophytes in tomato plants by using the seed inoculation method and examined their effect on plant growth, B. tabaci mortality, and adult emergence. Our study indicated that tomato seeds treated with a fungal suspension of I. javanica and P. lilacinum enabled their recovery from plant tissues (root, stem and leaf) up to 60 days after inoculation (DAI). Both endophytic isolates also caused significant mortality of adult B. tabaci on seedlings inoculated with, I. javanica (51.92±4.78%), and P. lilacinum (45.32±0.20%) compared to the control treatment (19.29±2.35). Adult emergence rates were significantly high in the control treatments (57.50±2.66%) compared to I. javanica (15.00±1.47%) and P. lilacinum (28.75±4.78%) treatments. This study provides evidence that endophytic isolates of I. javanica and P. lilacinum have a biocontrol potentials for used against whiteflies and could also explored as plant growth promoters.

Geleneksel insektisitlere umut verici bir alternatif olan entomopatojenik funguslar, bitki zararlı popülasyonlarının azaltılması için biyokontrol ajanları olarak yaygın olarak kullanılmaktadır. Ayrıca, son çalışmalar, entomopatojenik fungusların bitkilerde büyümeyi teşvik edici özelliklere de sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Bu araştırmanın amacı, yerli entomopatojenik fungus suşları olan Beauveria bassiana Pa4, Cordyceps fumosorosea KTU-42 ve Metarhizium flavoviride As-18'in ayçiçeği ve mısırın çimlenme ve erken gelişme periyodu üzerindeki etkilerini değerlendirmektir. Bu çalışmada, EPF uygulamasının mısırda tohum çimlenme yüzdesini etkilemediği ancak ayçiçeği tohumlarının çimlenme yüzdesini artırdığı tespit edilmiştir. Ayçiçeği örneklerinde M. flavoviride uygulamasının diğer EPF uygulamalarına ve kontrole göre kök-gövde ağırlığını, kök uzunluğunu, gövde çapını ve biyokütleyi önemli ölçüde arttırdığı belirlendi. Mısırda ise EPF uygulamalarının sadece kök uzunluğuna olumlu etki yaptığı belirlendi. Mısır bitkilerinde büyümeyi arttırmada en etkili mantar C. fumosorosea KTU-42 oldu. Ayçiçeği bitkilerinde ise M. flavoviride As-18 ile aynı sonuç elde edilmiştir. Bu çalışma, bu mantarların bitki gelişimini desteklediğini ve zararlı yönetiminin yanı sıra bitki üretiminde önemli bir faktör olarak görülmesi gerektiğini bildirmiştir.
