Endoscopic Surgery for Peritoneal Dialysis Catheters in Children

Abstract: Laparoscopy can also be used to rescue catheters that are dislodged or obstructed by omental wrapping and adhesions, thus increasing the life of the catheter. This chapter mainly describes two techniques of endoscopic surgical insertion of a PD catheter. It also discusses the role of endoscopic surgical techniques and the treatment of a number of complications.

“…Many investigators suggested that laparoscopic catheter placement is superior to open method in terms of the complication rate (especially peritonitis) and catheter survival. [ 8 20 ] In this study, we did not detect such advantages except peritonitis which was very low in laparoscopic group (25 in open group vs 4 in laparoscopic group). The cause of dialysis associated peritonitis in children is not clear.…”

“…Despite various types of catheters being available on the market (straight or arcuate, single or double or disc-shaped inner cuff with silicone ball), we preferred the straight double cuff type catheters. Even though the single cuff catheters are easy to remove, we preferred the double cuff ones in order to increase the fixation of the latter and to avoid complications related to its position in between the abdominal wall layers [ 1 ].…”
