Endoscopic tattooing

Abstract: The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) Technology Committee provides reviews of existing, new, or emerging endoscopic technologies that have an impact on the practice of GI endoscopy. Evidence-based methodology is used, with a MEDLINE literature search to identify pertinent clinical studies on the topic and a MAUDE (U.S. Food and Drug Administration Center for Devices and Radiological Health) database search to identify the reported complications of a given technology. Both are supplemented… Show more

“…In a series of 63 patients, 9.5% had peritoneal leakage, but mild peritonitis developed in only 1 patient. 24 Sentinel node detection after endoscopic tattooing is appealing because it is a side effect of a procedure that is often performed in daily practice to localize tumors in patients having laparoscopic surgery.…”

“…2 Despite the widespread use of SCPS, the literature contains only two reports of complications of its use: one case of mild peritonitis and one case of fever, abdominal pain, and abnormal liver enzyme levels after injection at the hepatic flexure. 3 We report a series of 4 cases, with endoscopic and/or histological evidence that SCPS is not biologically inert nor its use clinically benign. It may be potentially hazardous.…”

“…3 Once the submucosal bleb begins to form, saline solution injection is stopped, the needle tip is left in situ, and the saline syringe is exchanged for the SCPS syringe. SCPS is then injected.…”

“…Marking the lesion with SPOT during enteroscopy improved significantly the ability to locate the lesion intraoperatively and allowed a minimally invasive surgical approach. Tattooing agents usually used are indocyanine green, India ink and SPOT, and their indications, outcomes and safety data have been previously reviewed by ASGE in a Technology Status Evaluation Report [11].…”
