Endoscopic ultrasound-guided liver biopsy in pediatric patients

Abstract: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is routinely used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in adults, and there is emerging literature on its feasibility and safety in children. A recent novel application is EUS-guided liver biopsy (EUS-LB), which has shown to be technically simple, safe, and provides adequate diagnostic yield in adults for evaluation of liver disease; but the use of EUS-LB has never been evaluated in the pediatric population. We report the first case series of EUS-LB in the pediatric population, p… Show more

“…EUS in pediatrics continues to evolve, following the path of EUS in the adult patient population. Similarly in adult patients, endosonographers are performing EUS-guided liver biopsy, varix therapy, and EUS-guided biliary access in children ( 60 ). As techniques become more common for adult patients, we can expect these procedures to be used and studied in pediatric patients.…”

“…Indications of a diagnostic EUS in children include evaluation of idiopathic recurrent pancreatitis, tissue sampling or pancreatic cyst aspiration for analysis, suspected choledocholithiasis, submucosal lesions (esophageal, gastric, rectal), and congenital disorders (esophageal stenosis, tracheobronchial remnants, duodenal duplication cysts) [ 27 - 29 ]. EUS has also been used for assessing portal hypertension and performing a liver biopsy when required [ 30 ].…”

“…13 Since EUS-LB is performed under sedation, it can be done with ease in pediatric population. 14 Furthermore, the procedure can be done in the same sitting when performing a diagnostic EUS for evaluation of jaundice or liver pathology.…”
