Endovascular treatment of an abdominal aortic pseudoaneurysm as a late complication of inferior vena cava filter placement

Abstract: Pseudoaneurysms of abdominal aorta after inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement are uncommon, with associated morbidity and mortality. We report a case in which an abdominal aortic pseudoaneurysm resulted from erosion of a Bird's Nest (Cook, Bloomington, IN) IVC filter into the wall of the abdominal aorta. A 64-year-old woman with an IVC filter placed 10 years prior presented to the emergency department complaining of abdominal pain. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen and pelvis showed a 1.4-cm x 2.0… Show more

“…There has been a case report of an infrarenal aortic pseudoaneurysm after placement of a Simon Nitinol IVC filter (47). Additionally, an abdominal aortic pseudoaneurysm was reported from erosion of a Bird's Nest IVC filter into the wall of the abdominal aorta (48). Both of these were resolved with surgical graft placement.…”

“…23,38,39 Additionally, patients with vascular injury may require endovascular embolization, stent placement, or laparotomy and surgical ligation. 40 In high-risk patients, penetrations involving the abdominal aorta have been treated successfully with endovascular stent-grafts, 22,41 and penetration-induced obstructive nephropathy has been treated successfully with percutaneous nephrostomy and antegrade ureteral stenting. 42 This study was limited by the quality of included studies and reports in that the overall levels of evidence were not high.…”

“…Alternatively, presentation may be with local compressive symptoms, or even rupture. Endovascular treatment in the form of direct thrombin injection [22], coiling [23], occlusion devices [24], and endograft stenting [25,26] have all been described and often considered be first line option of treatment in most cases [27,28]. Open surgical repair of visceral iatrogenic pseudoaneurysms can be challenging, especially when in a previously exposed surgical field.…”
