Abstract:Introduction: Blunt trauma of the axillary and subclavian arteries is uncommon. Conventional surgery presents significant morbidity associated to the need of extensive exposure and challenging dissection through traumatized tissues. Endovascular treatment is an alternative that has increasingly been used in traumatic arterial injuries. This report presents three cases that were managed by endovascular techniques. Methods: We report the cases of three patients with blunt traumatic injuries of the subclavian and… Show more
“…The traditional method of repair is surgery, however this can be challenging for anatomical reasons and has the potential to result in life-and limbthreatening complications. Axillary artery transection injuries are uncommon and often require surgery to repair. The patient in this case was assessed to be at high risk for open surgery, and an urgent endovascular therapy option employing a stent graft is described.

“…Surgical repair is considered the standard approach but can be difficult for anatomic reasons, with consequent limb and life-threatening complications. [1] Endovascular therapy thus provides an alternative for therapy in the high-risk patient. Case reports exist for the management of pseudoaneurysms with stent grafts, but little to no data exists for the endovascular treatment of transections in the extremities.…”
Transection injuries of the axillary artery are rare and typically involve surgical repair. This case describes an emergent endovascular treatment option, using a stent graft, in a patient that was deemed as high risk for open surgery.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
