Energetics and dynamics of Coulomb explosion of highly charged clusters

Abstract: Ultrafast femtosecond Coulomb explosion of charged homogeneous (Xe n) and heterogeneous doped (HIAr n) small and medium sized clusters (nϽ60) is studied resting on the picture of a vertical high-order multiphoton ionization from the ground state nuclear configuration. The final average atomic velocity ͑simulated at constant charge͒ increases with increasing the cluster size, and at constant cluster size increases linearly with the ion charge, in accord with the predictions of an analytical model. The linear de… Show more

“…Depending on the laser and target parameters different regimes of acceleration appear -from acceleration at the target surface called the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) [13,15,16] through the Coulomb explosion [17][18][19][20] to radiation pressure dominance acceleration (RPDA) regime [21][22][23][24]. The ion acceleration regimes are shown in the plane of the laser intensitythe surface density n e l 0 of the target in Fig.…”

“…in the domain (II), the laser radiation is so intense that it blows out almost all electrons from the irradiated region of the target. The remaining ions undergo fast expansion, known as Coulomb explosion, due to the repelling of noncompensated positive electric charges [20]. At the opaqueness/transparency threshold, in the vicinity of the a 0 /ε p = 1 line in Fig.…”

“…The molecular dynamic approach to laser-cluster interactions was initiated by Last and Jortner [10][11][12][13]. They have further shed light on the techniques which are very essential to perform the MD simulation in an efficient manner, like the lumping of actual particles to form a one macro-particle with same charge to mass ratio [14].…”
