Energetics of two-body Hamiltonians in post-Minkowskian gravity

Abstract: Advanced methods for computing perturbative, quantum-gravitational scattering amplitudes show great promise for improving our knowledge of classical gravitational dynamics. This is especially true in the weak-field and arbitrary-speed (post-Minkowskian, PM) regime, where the conservative dynamics at 3PM order has been recently determined for the first time, via an amplitude calculation. Such PM results are most relevantly applicable to relativistic scattering (unbound orbits), while bound/inspiraling binary sy… Show more

“…Note that the same results a fortiori apply to the EOB conserved quantities, which by construction are equal to their PN counterparts (considered in a CoM frame). In the EOB formalism, both the second-post-Minkowskian Hamiltonian (second order in G and all orders in 1/c) [31], and the third-post-Minkowskian one [O(G 3 )] [38,39], have been recently derived and exhibit the same features. Let us also note that the validity of the first law of binary dynamics has been also checked at the fourth post-Newtonian approximation [56].…”

“…The value of the 2PM, O(G 2 ), term u 2 Q ν2 (H S ) has been computed in Ref. [10], while the value of the 3PM, O(G 3 ), term u 3 Q ν3 (H S ) is still a matter of debate [15,21,22,63]. The additional, tidal-related contribution Q tidal in Eq.…”

“…The post-Minkowskian (PM) approach to gravitational interaction, which was pioneered some time ago [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8], has been recently revived [9,10] and has undergone many developments both in classical gravity [11][12][13][14][15], and in the connection between classical gravity and quantum scattering amplitudes . The aim of the present paper is to extend the post-Minkowskian approach to tidal effects in binary systems.…”

“…An exception is 't Hooft's 1987 calculation[10] which is carried out assuming a non-trivial background metric 2. Recently, impressive amplitude calculations have also been carried out for the collision of massive (and typically non-relativistic) particles up the two-loop (3PM) order[45,46] and their outcome was incorporated into the EOB potential[47].…”
