Energy absorption characteristics in hybrid composite materials for marine applications under impact loading: Case of tidal current turbine

Abstract: Summary The tidal current turbine is the most efficient way to extract energy from the sea. This system can be prone to critical loads such as impact accidental in the installation and maintenance phase. Indeed, several complex modes of damage susceptible to harming the stability of the structure are studied to conceive hybrid composite nozzles with better resistance to damage. For this reason, two scenarios of low‐velocity impact of a hybrid composite nozzle (glass/carbon) were investigated. In both cases, th… Show more

“…Composite materials are becoming increasingly popular in marine, aerospace, automotive, and other industries and offer excellent strength-to-weight ratios, improved thermal and mechanical properties, and other desirable qualities that result from combining different constituent materials. The use of composites in hydrogen storage tanks could improve the efficiency of such systems [18][19][20].…”

“…The impact problem extends beyond the specific case of grid structural systems affected by rockfall and animals. It encompasses a broad range of scenarios, including heavy objects falling on beam and plate structures [ 5 , 6 ] and the impact of storms on marine structures, such as tidal current turbines [ [7] , [8] , [9] , [10] ]. It is important to note that each case involves distinct properties of impactors and target structures, necessitating comprehensive studies tailored to the specific circumstances of each scenario.…”

“…The effect of low-velocity impact on hybrid composite pipes structures is always stayed not perfectly understood and especially its numerical simulation is extremely complicated. Energy absorption characteristics in composites and hybrid composite materials used in marine energy under impact loading was investigated in [45][46][47][48]. Shi et al [49] proposed a damage evolution model for predicting different scenarios in a circular plate subjected to low-velocity impact, the experimental data confronted with the numerical model, the numerical results show the best agreement.…”
