Energy and bandwidth-efficient Wireless Sensor Networks for monitoring high-frequency events

Abstract: Abstract-Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are mostly deployed to detect events (i.e., objects or physical changes) at a high/low frequency sampling that is usually adapted by a central unit (or a sink), thus requiring additional resource usage in WSNs. However, the problem of autonomous adaptive sampling regarding the detection of events has not been studied before. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme, termed "event-sensitive adaptive sampling and low-cost monitoring (e-Sampling)" by addressing the problem… Show more

“…But the deployments do not focus on the integration of both types of aspects (called cyber-physical system (CPS) aspects) [Peckens and Lynch 2013;Anshuman et al 2013;Bocca et al 2011;Farrar and Worden 2012;Yi et al 2011;Araujo et al 2012;Bhuiyan et al 2013a]. This isolation may result in suboptimal CPS solutions.…”

“…Base Station is responsible for the collection and processing of data collected from various different types of sensors [1,2]. The sensors deployed in the network are either of the same type or of different types depending on the application [3]. Open-air environments need many sensor nodes to cover a large area whereas fewer sensor nodes are needed in indoor environments in a sensor network [4,5].…”

“…Due to the low power and easy deployment of wireless sensors, the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are becominghas become an enabling technology for SHM applications. Moreover, the new progress about sensor technology makes WSN effective and generates economical solution for a variety of applications, such as target tracking, scientific exploration and environmental monitoring [1][2][3], multi-sensor intelligent development has have been the trend of SHM system.…”

“…SHM systems monitor the health status of the structure and provide long-term monitoring and rapid analysis of unusual events such as earthquakes, loads, etc. In practice, it is difficult to achieve the goal because of the requirements of on SHM and the severe limitations of WSNs [1,3]. One of the basic requirements for on SHM is the sensor location optimization.…”
